The end of our first day!

We went back to our hotel and finally got a picture of it.

We decided to walk around and try to find the old city wall. I loved the markets we saw along the way.

We found the wall and saw this sign. We couldn't quite figure out what they meant, but we made sure not to walk on the grass.

There was also this sign. Anyone know what the next-to-the-last one is? We don't. No setting a building on fire?

The old city wall of Beijing...

Everywhere we went, the trees were painted white on the bottom. We asked why. Peter said that they paint the bottom half with lye so that the bugs don't burrow into the trees and kill them.

There were tiny little police offices in the middle of other buildings all over the place.

Just like in Korea, there is exercise equipment in random locations. The boys said they had to try it out.

We went into another market, and we met our goal! What was our goal, you ask? To find something in China MADE IN THE USA! Grapes!

These teeny little cars were all over the place. They are three-wheeled and handicapped people use them to get around.

Pizza Hut! KFC!

McDonald's!

7-11!

We were told to try a noodle restaurant. We went inside and checked out the menu. Umm..it did not seem appetizing at all. We left. In front of the restaurant was a rickshaw and some little statues of Chinese men.

A warning on some steps...

Domino's!

We decided to eat at McDonald's, something that was a little more familiar to us. As we walked there, we saw a parking area with tons of bicycles.

Two satisfied boys.

Our first day in China was complete. We went back to the hotel, played some cards and went to bed.

One thing I failed to mention that happened at the airport was pretty gross. We were at the airport waiting for our luggage. A Chinese man sneezed and sneezed and sneezed and sneezed and sneezed and sneezed. He never stopped. I kept moving as far away from him as I could. Suddenly, he sneezed and tons of snot poured out of his nose into his hands. He wiped it on his pants. It was disgusting. Unfortunately, it doesn't end there. He kept sneezing, and I continued to move away. As he was leaving, he blew his nose onto the floor of the airport and kept walking. I gagged. I thought I would throw up. It was so nasty. What a welcome to his country, huh? Chinese spit all the time, and they smoke everywhere. EVERYWHERE! We couldn't get away from cigarette smoke in all of China until our last hotel, but that's another story. Oh my word! The cigarette smoke is horrible there! I'll discuss the pollution in tomorrow's post. :)

Up Next: Day 2, Tian'anmen Square

Looks like I won't be visiting China then! Cigarette smoke is my number 1 asthma trigger. Icky! Glad your day was turned around though after the airport site! :)
