I say it's a cuss word.

I know. Strange title. But Michael and I have a differing opinion on something. And, I know other Christians who feel the way that Michael does. So, I thought I'd bring it to the masses.

I was brought up where p*** or p***** (as in "p'd off") is a cuss word. Michael says it's not. Now don't get me wrong. Michael doesn't say it because he knows how I feel about it.

I started thinking about this word. If it wasn't a "bad" word, then Lucy would have said it on I Love Lucy. Or we might have heard it come out of Andy Griffith's mouth. Why didn't we? The first time I ever remember hearing it on tv was on the show Friends. And this was only after the networks realized they could get away with d***, h***, a**, and b****. Now they are getting away with p***.

If it isn't a cuss word, then why did George Carlin list it as one of the seven dirty words you can't say on television? You can read the wikipedia article yourself, but be warned, the words he lists are HORRIBLE! You can trust me on this one, or read it for yourself. (And yet, p*** is one of them....makes you wonder, doesn't it?)

God's Word says, "But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips." (Colossians 3:8) And, "The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks." (Luke 6:45)

Personally, I want positive, uplifting language coming out of my mouth, not a word that George Carlin lists as a dirty word. (And he would know.) So, I still think it's a cuss word. Now, I can't wait for Michael to get home from CA so I can share with him what I found. :D In the meantime, what do you think?

Hi Laura,
Here is what I 'think'...a cuss word is a word damning either God or the things he made...with the word p***, I think it is a word that is used for a bodily function, although I do not like it. I taught my children to say 'pottie' and 'grunt'...that way I was never embarrassed in public when they blurted it out.
In my day p*** was never used...EVER!!! It was considered a 'bad' word...not a cuss word.
In the day and age in which we live where words are sooooo very bad...boy, 'p*** is a word that is very low on the list.
At the Christian school, in which I taught for 31 years, the teachers used it all the time. At first I was very offended. As time went along, I became less offended, but even to this day, it makes me 'prickle' to hear it used so readily.
Do I think it will take you to hell, or you are sinning when you use it, no, I do not.
But, I am offended with 'gosh', 'gee', 'darn', and all the slang we use instead of the 'official words...God and damn.
Now those words, in my book, are really offensive and I never allowed my students to use them in my classroom. "Let your yes, be yes, and your no, no..." you don't need all those kind of words to get your point across.
Having said all that, I do know that God tells us to only let 'good' things come out of our mouth.
If Jesus were here on earth today, would he say p***, no, I do not think so.
So, I believe the label you have put on the word as a cuss word I do not agree with, but it being a word we need to have coming out of our mouths, that is a whole 'nuther story'!
Thank goodness God is the judge. As for me...no, I do not use any of the above words...just to be 'safe'...
Luv ya,
Blessings coming your way,
Carol

Wow, you are making people think. I think it is a very disgusting word to use in general talk. I don't know if I would say "cuss word", but I would say it is not a word that should be used. A funny story though- my sister used "po'd" when my nephew was young. When he said one day "I am po'd", she asked him if he knew what that meant. He said, "Yes, it means I am put out." :) Shelly
